On the evening of the cast's first grueling day at boot camp, Tom Hanks made an appearance at the camp to give them a pep talk, having gone through the training himself under Dale Dye for Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump. James Badge Dale recalled that he couldn't pay attention to a word Hanks said, since he was so anxious over whether he had properly set up his hooch tent.
