Mats Bergman based his performance and appearance on Stig Järrel's character Caligula in Spasimo (1944), which in Sweden is seen as the prototypical "evil teacher". When Bergman had finished filming his scenes, he called his father Ingmar Bergman, the writer of Torment, and said "Dad, I'v risen Caligula from the dead".
