The very last words of the film are: "Goodbye Dolly I must leave you, though it breaks my heart to go..." and is a subliminal farewell of the director Sir David Leanto his masterpiece. They are the words of the song sung by the soldiers on the truck going in the opposite direction. The song is "Goodbye, Dolly Gray", published in 1897, with lyrics by Will D. Cobband music by Paul Barnes.
