When Matt Reeves met with Colin Farrell regarding his potential casting, he was thrilled Farrell was significantly heavier. Farrell had gained weight for his previous project, The North Water (2021). Reeves asked him to keep the weight, but Farrell declined due to health issues. As The Penguin, Farrell wore a fat suit over the 'North Water' weight he was yet to lose.
