Actress Alexandra Moltke did the voiceover introductions on the majority of the beginning episodes until it was discovered that they had to pay her full daily pay even if her character wasn't in the episode. So, to be cost effective, they then had an actor or actress appearing on that particular episode do the introduction. Another consideration was that her character, Victoria Winters, was no longer central to the drama because the vampire, Barnabas Collins, was now the main protagonist. Moltke's early narrations had always been done in character as Victoria, but after she stopped doing the opening narration regularly, the actor doing it, even when it was Moltke, was no longer understood to be the character that the actor portrayed in the series. At first, only female cast members read the opening narration, but eventually both male and female actors narrated. The only requirement was that it had to be an actor who also appeared in the episode so that they would not receive a day's pay only for the narration.
