The final dialogue scene between Frodo and Sam was shot during re-shoots after principal photography. Originally it would only be Gollum's final monologue, but the makers felt that there had to be some sort of reconciliation scene between Frodo and Sam, to make up for their aggressive confrontation during the film's climax.
