After the Wild Bunch critical success, several year after Major Dundee, Columbia pictures proposed to Sam Peckinpah to restore Major Dundee to the original version but he turned down the proposal, claiming he no longer had the time to monitor it. For him, major Dundee was more useful as a lost masterpiece than a rediscovered failure.
