After Planet of the Apes - Il pianeta delle scimmie (2001) was a financial success, there was a plan to make a sequel using that film's open-ended cliffhanger as a starting point. It was nixed due to bad critical reviews and creative differences with director Tim Burton. In 2006, a proposal to reboot the franchise beginning with a plot similar to 1999: conquista della Terra (1972) was proposed, and took another five years to reach the big screen.
