John Candy played the role of Gus Polinski as a favor to John Hughes, and was paid scale (Screen Actors Guild minimum wage). The character was inspired by real-life Jan "Polka King" Lewan, who lived in Pennsylvania, and whose polka band really did do tours around the world.
