Although director Rolf de Heer had met actor Gary Sweet a few times he hadn't considered him for "The Fanatic' until a chance meeting in Adelaide, South Australia. De Heer noticed that Sweet had "profoundly changed" since the last time they had met. De Heer said: "It was as if he'd come to terms with himself in a way that he hadn't before. His appearance was much more interesting as well and suddenly it was like 'Bang - my God, he could make a fantastic Fanatic'."
