Ed Helms left the show in 2006 to become a regular cast member on The Office (2005), along with The Daily Show (1996) castmate Steve Carell. He returned to The Daily Show (1996) on December 12 to report on the confirmation of new Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and made an allusion to his stint on The Office (2005) by telling the audience he was working undercover in Scranton.
