Married couple Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were offered the roles of Chad and Patrick on season one, but declined because Burtka didn't want to play a couple in constant fight so soon after Harold & Kumar, un Natale da ricordare (2011). He feared that people would think Harris and he were a troubled couple. They were both later featured in supporting roles during season four.
