James Gunn added a note of thanks to Suicide Squad (2016) director David Ayer in the credits to The Suicide Squad. While it had been claimed that Gunn's film was never a direct follow-up to 2016's Suicide Squad, it does follow on in several ways: the dynamic between Harley, Flag, and Boomerang most notably, as well as Amanda Waller who again resorts to coercing expendable convicts into doing the government's dirty work by threat of small explosives placed in their necks. Gunn owes those characters to Ayer's work, even if the final cut they appeared in wasn't his true vision.
