Although originally enemies, having both been married to the same man (Pete Beale), Kathy Beale and Pat Butcher were eventually scripted as best friends, having been united by their experiences. The same plot device was used again for Pat, who became best friends with Peggy Mitchell, who had married Pat's third husband, Frank Butcher, after their divorce. A third pair of wives, Shirley Carter and Denise Fox - the ex-wife and widow of Kevin Wicks respectively - would subsequently also become close friends.
