The number four is referenced a number of times throughout the film. There are four ghosts, Penny and her kids are a family of four, the bus initially says "4 Terminal", they all sing, "Walk Like A Man", originally recorded by the Four Seasons, and, from the time the ghosts re-appear to Thomas until he finishes up helping them accomplish their tasks, that's a span of four days.
