Filmed entirely in the UK as producer Mel Brooks wanted the film to feel as authentic as possible. Many original locations were used after significant redressing plus Brooks had been impressed at the results of another period film he had produced at Shepperton Studios in Il fratello più furbo di Sherlock Holmes (1975) five years earlier. Relatively new to directing, David Lynch was at first not keen to work outside of the U.S. but changed his mind after Brooks asked Gene Wilder (who had starred in and directed the Sherlock Holmes film) to talk to him about the positive experience he had.
