After leaving the WJM news staff, Gordy the weatherman became a successful talk show host. The fact that Gordy, a black protege of the Mary Tyler Moore staff left and became a successful national talk show host; rich and famous; after being inspired by Mary, Lou and the rest of the staff; can be seen as an example of life imitating art and art imitating life. Because during this same period a black anchorwoman who modelled herself as an MTM protege did infact go on to great success in a national market and did have a trailblazing career; citing Mary Tyler Moore as her inspiration. That person was Oprah Winfrey, who has in countless interviews said Mary Tyler Moore was her idol. She even filmed a satire of the MTM opening, with her filling in for Mary Richards, running around the city and throwing her hat up in the air at the end of the segment just like in the original show. And Mary Tyler Moore even surprised her by showing up in her studio right after Oprah showed this clip to her audience, causing the starstruck Winfrey to break down in tears.
