The black coat that Colonel Mortimer wears is called an Inverness. Named after a port city in northern Scotland it was a popular overcoat in the British Isles before making its way to the US. It's iconic cape was designed to help keep rain and moisture away from the rest of the garment, as well as the wearer's pant legs and shoes. By the early 20th century it became known as a Sherlock Holmes coat.
