Unseen sides of Jacqueline Kennedy are also revealed in her interactions with her equally shattered brother-in-law, who was also the Attorney General of the United States, Robert F. Kennedy, an icon in his own right, who was assassinated while running for President in 1968. The role was played by Peter Sarsgaard. Like Portman, Sarsgaard faced the gauntlet of trying to capture the essence of a man who is beyond recognizable and revered. Sarsgaard admitted: "I was initially hesitant to play R.F.K. I wrestled with it, yet I couldn't get it out of my head. I admired him so much. I was already familiar with some of the moments of his life, and knew how he'd been completely poised in a moment of crisis. I wasn't really sure I could do it, and I said as much to Pablo LarraÃn when we first talked, but Pablo gave me the confidence to try."
