Creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland auditioned more actresses for the role of Kathy Beale than for another other role. Both were highly impressed with Gillian Taylforth, but knew that at 29, she was too young. However, having not seen anyone else they liked enough to hire, Smith and Holland 'talked themselves into it', rewriting Kathy's backstory to say she had given birth to her son Ian at the age of 18 - making Kathy four years older than Taylforth.
