Originally the creators had no intention on making Mac being out of the closet definitively because the comedic aspect of his hypocrisy worked really well for them creatively, but after seeing the fans reaction to season 11, in which Mac briefly comes out and then returns to the closet, they decided to have him be openly gay for season 12 because they realized the importance of representation with LGBTQI+ characters.
