The scene where the air to the Mars colony is cut off was initially shot with the Martians violently gasping for oxygen. However, this gave the scene an unintentionally comical feeling. It was director of photography Jost Vacano who suggested to have the actors lying down quietly while fighting to survive, in order to give the scene a much more dramatic tone. He remembered how effective this had been when he shot a similar scene in U-Boot 96 (1981) in the same way.
