In the film, the dead pilot who would be replaced by "Pensacola" is referred to in the film as having lost a wing. This is what happened with the first prototype of the F3F when it broke up during a dive recovery test. Later in the film, Pensacola finds himself in a spin. The second prototype was lost in an unrecoverable spin.
