Filming in New York City allowed the show to cast many theatre actors, including many of the most prominent. At least 13 members of the Theatre Hall of Fame appeared on the show. Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston were long-running cast members. Elaine Stritch, George Grizzard and Patti LuPone all had multiple appearances as defense attorneys. James Earl Jones and Gregory Hines also played defense attorneys. Others appearing in at least one episode include Jane Alexander, Christine Baranski, Roscoe Lee Browne, Len Cariou, Eli Wallach and Fritz Weaver.
