Following Louis XVI's execution, there was a prolonged discussion in the National Convention on what to do with Marie Antoinette. One idea was to execute her like her husband, another was to offer her to France's enemies in exchange for French prisoners of war, a third suggested delivering her to the Austrians in exchange for ransom money. The revolutionary Thomas Paine (1737-1809) suggested exiling the former queen to the United States.
