Gene Roddenberry initially refused to cast Patrick Stewart as Picard. Roddenberry had envisioned a younger captain, with a full head of hair. But Stewart so impressed producer Robert H. Justman that Justman campaigned for him to be cast. Roddenberry finally relented after every other considered actor auditioned and Stewart was the only one who was right for the role.
