While discussing Cabrini-Green, Bernadette tells Helen she "...heard a kid got shot there, the other day." Ironically, on October 13, 1992, days before the film's release, a boy and real-life resident named Dantrell Davis was killed by a stray bullet while walking to school. The shooter was identified as local gang member Anthony Garrett, who intended to kill a rival. Garrett was convicted of first degree murder for Davis' death, and received a 100-year sentence.
