The 1840 storyline had characters with either direct or indirect connections to both the earlier 1795 and 1897 storylines. Direct connections to the 1795 (referred to as 1797 by this point in the series) storyline: Barnabas Collins (who originally had no knowledge past 1795 when freed from his chained coffin, but was then eventually possessed by his spirit from 1970), Angelique Bouchard Collins (posing as Valerie Collins in 1840, who had no knowledge of neither 1897 nor 1968), Ben Stokes (Joshua Collins' servant who helped Barnabas in 1795), Daniel Collins (Barnabas' cousin who became Joshua's adopted heir once Barnabas was chained into his coffin). Direct connections to the 1897 storyline: Barnabas (whose spirit from 1969 traveled to possess his body in 1897, which was still chained into his coffin), Angelique (who was summoned by Quentin Collins II and Evan Hanley to deal with Barnabas, and had knowledge of both 1968 and Barnabas' first trip back to 1796), Edith Collins (Gabriel Collins' wife who would become the grandmother of Edward, Judith, Quentin II and Carl Collins and great-grandmother of Jamison and Nora Collins), Dr. Julia Hoffman (whose spirit from 1969 briefly traveled to 1897 to help Barnabas), Daniel Collins (Barnabas' cousin and Edith's father-in-law whose spirit, both unseen and unheard by the audience, appeared to Edith as her death approached). Indirect connections to 1897: Quentin Collins I (the uncle or great uncle of Edward, Judith, Carl and his namesake, Quentin II), Leticia Faye (perhaps the mother, grandmother or aunt of Carl's murdered fiancee, the mentalist Pansy Faye). Indirect connections to both 1795 and 1897: Lamar Trask (son of the 1795 fanatical witch hunter, Reverend Trask, grandfather of Gregory Trask and great-grandfather of Charity Trask, both in 1897).
