Nicholas Meyer envisioned this film as the ultimate extension of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's idea of "Horatio Hornblower in space". Therefore, before filming began, he had the cast watch Le avventure del capitano Hornblower (Il temerario) (1951) for inspiration.
