This movie marks the first appearance of Ethan Hunt's 'Dimitri' alias, which he uses again in Mission: Impossible - Protocollo fantasma (2011) while imprisoned in Moscow. In Mission: Impossible (1996) the IM team coerces a man into giving up the name of a contact: Dimitri Miediev. Given the wide range of names available to the writers and the unlikelihood of randomly using the same name in the sequel without a specific reason, it can be assumed that Dimitri Miediev is replaced by Ethan Hunt, who then continues to use that name as a cover.
