In addition to characters such as Batman and Wonder Woman (who were off-limits due to the Warner Bros. film division's veto), the showrunners were initially denied permission to use Lois Lane on the show, due to the character also appearing in the Superman film(s) in production at the time. When they finally got permission to use her in the fourth season, it was on a temporary basis (hence her guest star status), before the studio finally relented and gave the go-ahead to make her a regular presence starting with season 5.
