Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters (Acchiappafantasmi) (1984) director Ivan Reitman, was asked in an interview if he would consider directing the reboot. He joked that, based on his existing work, his version of the film would just be people talking about ghosts. Three years after this film's release, it was announced that he was directing a new Ghostbusters (Acchiappafantasmi) (1984) movie, which would be a sequel to his father's movies in the original timeline. Both Reitmans appeared on a panel that year with Paul Feig at Ghostbusters Fan Fest on Sony's Culver City studio lot, and the younger director thanked Feig for "kicking down the door on what a Ghostbuster and who a Ghostbuster could be."
