Screenwriter Rhett Reese and director Tim Miller credit James Cameron and David Fincher for helping the movie get made. Both directors read and loved early drafts of the script, and used their long history with 20th Century Fox studios to convince executives to give the movie a go. Fox initially consented to a PG-13 version only, but agreed to an R rating after some budget cuts.
