Though Smith was always the first choice to play Steven Hiller, Eddie Murphy was the immediate backup and who Dean Devlin expected would end up being cast due to his star power. The studio wanted a white actor for the role and considered Tom Cruise (whose 34th birthday was the day of this film's release), Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and William Baldwin for the part.
