Michael Beck was considered for the part of David Kessler after John Landis had seen him in I guerrieri della notte (1979). But PolyGram wouldn't allow him to be cast because of the critical and commercial failure of Xanadu (1980). Ironically, David Naughton and Griffin Dunne previously auditioned for the role of Sonny Malone in that film, but the part ultimately went to Beck.
