In the book, and the film's original ending, Lyra's uncle Asriel kills her best friend Roger to open a bridge to a parallel universe. The studio removed it in favor of an abrupt but happier conclusion. The studio intended to use the unhappy ending as the beginning of the sequel, which never materialized due to the film's disappointing commercial returns, although they produced Queste oscure materie (2019), which re-adapted the books.
