In the infamous basement scene containing the jars of severed body parts, a live octopus can be seen in a tank among the jars, presumably as a torture method. This could be a reference to the erotic Japanese woodblock print, "The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife" in which a nude woman poses with several octopi. It is prominently featured in the film. The octopus could also be an homage by Park Chan-wook to his film Oldboy (2003) where Choi Min-sik had to eat a live octopus in the sushi restaurant scene.
