Going by the beginning of the 1897 storyline and changed somewhat by the emergence of David Selby as the second major star behind Jonathan Frid by the time the 1840 storyline began, the secret of Barnabas Collins was passed down from his father, Joshua Collins, to his cousin and adopted heir, Daniel Collins, then from Daniel to his son Gabriel Collins, from Gabriel to his wife, Edith, from Edith to her oldest grandchild, Edward Collins. It is unclear whether or not Edward was able to pass Barnabas' secret to his son, Jamison Collins. So the secret either died with Edward before he can tell it to Jamison, or he was able to tell him and it died with Jamison, as we now know that Jamison's oldest child, the future Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, never received that secret. When Barnabas travelled to 1897, Edith died shortly after recognizing him, thus preventing her from telling Barnabas' secret to Edward, though he and his siblings Judith, Quentin, and Carl, and also Gregory Trask, eventually discovered it, albeit in different ways for each. In the 1840 storyline, the adult but mentally unsound Daniel recognized Angelique and then remembered what Barnabas was, though Angelique was able to make him forget by blackmailing him with the knowledge that she knew that he murdered his wife, Harriet. So it is safe to say that after Barnabas' trip to 1840, that his secret died with Daniel.
