It should be noted that by the time the film was released, the Gemini two-man missions had been concluded two years earlier and the most recent flight was the unmanned Apollo mission 6. The Apollo I fire took place in January of 1967 and at the time the film was released in May, 1968 there were no missions scheduled. The horror of the astronaut's deaths underscored the horror presented in this film.
