With respect to military planning, a branch is a contingency plan or course of action for changing the mission, disposition, orientation, or direction of movement of the force to aid success of the current operation based on anticipated events, opportunities, or disruptions caused by enemy action. Sequels are future operations that anticipate possible outcomes - success, failure, or stalemate of the current operation.
