In an April 2017 Vanity Fair interview with Mark Linn-Baker, journalist Lisa Liebman writes that before Linn-Baker knew about the recurring jokes about the disappearances of the "Perfect Strangers" cast and made his eventual cameos on this show as "himself", he had actually auditioned to play the part of Nora's supervisor in the Department of Sudden Departures. According to Damon Lindelof, Linn-Baker gave a good reading for the role, but Linn-Baker couldn't play the part because the show had already made reference to "Mark Linn-Baker" having disappeared. This rejection paved the way for the season two revelation that Linn-Baker had faked his own disappearance and was hiding out in Mexico, and for the season three scene between Linn-Baker and Nora (Carrie Coon) in which Linn-Baker explains the machine that he claims can reunite people with their departed loved ones.
