Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded "Free Bird" for its debut album released in 1973 and released it as a single the following year. The original studio recording of the song runs at more than nine minutes, although they released a single version that was cut down to less than five minutes.Don McLean released his signature song "American Pie" in 1971, clocking in at 8 minutes and 32 seconds. The song was so long that when it was released as a single, it had to be split between both sides of a 7-inch vinyl. "American Pie" spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard chart, and set a record for the longest song to reach number one - a record that stood for fifty years until Taylor Swift's 10-minute version of "All Too Well" was released in 2021.Like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Free Bird" and "American Pie" have since become classic rock radio staples, usually played in their entirety.
