The film never actually tells us in what year it is set. The title leads us to assume it is set in 2001, but since there is an 18-month gap between the Heywood Floyd chapter and the David/HAL chapter, only one of these two sections can take place in 2001. The text prologue at the beginning of 2010 - L'anno del contatto (1984) confirms that Bowman's disappearance occurs in 2001.
