Despite being the primary and title character, Mary Poppins is completely unnecessary to the plot in regards to William Wilkins' real estate swindle, as Dick van Dyke's character is revealed to have been investigating his nephew's actions prior to the arrival of Mary Poppins. The only real help she does is get the three children more interested in magic and imagination.
