Christopher Nolan cited silent movies such as Rapacità (1924), Intolerance (1916), and Aurora (1927) as inspirations for this movie's crowd scenes: "I spent a lot of time reviewing the silent films for crowd scenes. The way extras move, evolve, how the space is staged, and how the cameras capture it, the views used." Nolan also studied Un condannato a morte è fuggito (1956), Diario di un ladro (1959), Salvate il soldato Ryan (1998), and Vite vendute (1953) to dissect the process of creating suspense through details.
