According Star Trek lore, John de Lancie was cast as Q in order to help Patrick Stewart settle into his role quickly. Stewart, primarily a classically trained stage actor, with limited television experience at this point, found himself surrounded by actors who were primarily known for television roles. Experienced stage actor John de Lancie, well known in U.S. theatrical circles for having an imposing stage presence, was brought in to the pilot in order to give the Q character a theatrical feel. Stewart appreciated the gesture as he felt it helped him raise his game. That they worked well as sparring adversaries helped the pilot show enormously (as executives thought the 'Encounter at Farpoint' script was not a strong one) and the Q character would make several reappearances during the shows seven-year run.
