While the series is primarily an adaptation of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's series Jaianto robo (1967) (Daisaku Kusama and his giant robot fight against the nefarious Big Fire Group), it incorporates characters from Yokoyama's other works. This was because the producers could not use the original supporting cast or villains from the original Jaianto robo (1967) series.
