There are some theories that state that Betty represents Diane when she was a naive and happy newcomer actress. During the first half of the film concerning the scenes with Betty, the scenes have a dreamy effect and bright and warmer tint. This is to emphasize that reimagining herself as Betty, Diane had initially had big dreams in Hollywood. As the film goes on, the dreamy effect and the bright and warmer tint gradually fade away. By the middle of the film, Betty's scenes become somewhat darker when she finds herself in the middle of a possible murder and getting involved romantically with Rita. This emphasizes that Diane's experience in Hollywood is starting to take a turn for the worse and is slowly killing her dreams. In the latter half of the film, the scenes with Diane look gloomy and have a much darker tint. This emphasizes that due to her now horrible experience in Hollywood, Diane's dreams are broken.
