In the scene where Tess (Julia Roberts) is introduced, she is barefoot as she is walking down the stairs because it would have been difficult to navigate a spiral staircase in high-heels. In fact, Roberts' shoes were often hurting her feet during filming and she went in bare feet whenever the camera would only show her at waist-level.
