The Prometheus (originally called the 'Magellan', named after the famous 16th century Portuguese explorer) was meant to resemble a cross between an oil rig and a giant walking insect. The large, faceted, wrap-around windscreens are the insect's eyes, and the hangar bay that lowers down underneath resembles eggs carried on the underbelly. The outside was rendered with visual effects, overlayed with textures resembling the Nostromo from Alien (1979). The hangar and garage were built for real on the backlot of Pinewood Studios in England, and the interior of the ship was fully built inside the studio across a two level structure; the windscreen and the "floating" crew positions projecting into it were recycled from unused original designs for the Nostromo's bridge. The rest of the interior is actually a relatively faithful copy of the Nostromo's lay-out, but then much more state-of-the-art and spacious, befitting the Company' scientific flagship, as compared to the low-tech and cramped Nostromo which is a mere towing vehicle full of outdated technology. Vickers' quarters were designed to represent her high status on the ship, being furnished with modern and futuristic items including Swarovski chandeliers and a Fazioli piano. For these rooms, the other parts of the ship (especially the Mess Hall) were redressed, with the breakfast table being exchanged for the Med-Pod.
